MTG Starter Kits

FAQ

• What is in an MTG kit?

Kits here are products for building or running decks rather than packs of random cards. Most are Deck Builder's Toolkits, such as the Amonkhet or Kaladesh toolkit, which bring cards and accessories together to start deck building. Land Stations, like the Core Set 2020 Land Station or the Land Station 2022, form a separate line, and the Marvel's Spider-Man Web Slingers Kit of 2025 joins them.

Contents vary, so read the product page.

• Which sets have a Deck Builder's Toolkit or Land Station?

Deck Builder's Toolkits are listed from Magic 2010 in 2009 through the core sets Magic 2011 to Magic 2015, then Magic Origins, Shadows over Innistrad, Ixalan, Core Set 2019, Ravnica Allegiance and Core Set 2020, up to Theros Beyond Death in 2020. Land Stations exist for Magic 2011, Magic 2014, Magic Origins, Amonkhet and Core Set 2020, and there is also a Land Station 2022.

• What should I check before buying a kit?

Start with the exact product name, because this page mixes toolkits, Land Stations and the Web Slingers Kit. Toolkits share a name from one set to the next, so the Ixalan toolkit is not the Kaladesh one. Kits are listed in English, French, German, Italian, Spanish and Japanese, and most also in Brazilian Portuguese, Russian, Chinese and Korean.

Then look at the box for dents or a broken seal.

• Kit, starter deck or Commander deck: which should a new player pick?

A kit gives you material to build your own deck. If you would rather play at once, a starter deck such as a Welcome Deck is made for learning, and a Commander deck is ready for multiplayer games. After a toolkit such as Magic Origins, single cards let you refine the deck one card at a time.
