Pokémon Theme Decks

FAQ

• What does a Pokémon theme deck look like?

A theme deck is a ready-to-play deck sold with a set and built around one or two Pokémon named on the box. The Relentless Flame deck from SM - Team Up plays around Charizard, and its partner, Torrential Cannon, around Blastoise. Sets often come with a pair, like the Vivid Voltage Theme Deck [Charizard] and [Drednaw]. The list is fixed, so you get exactly the deck in the title, and the product page gives the details.

• Which Pokémon sets have theme decks?

Theme decks span more than a decade of sets. Mysterious Treasures (2007) has Skull Charge and Armor Fortress, Majestic Dawn (2008) has Polar Frost and Forest Force, then come the XY sets such as XY - Flashfire, the Sun & Moon sets and SWSH04: Vivid Voltage (2020). The set named on the box tells you which expansion the deck's cards come from.

• What should I check before buying a theme deck?

Match the deck name and the Pokémon in brackets, because a set's two decks are listed side by side: Rebel Clash Theme Deck [Zacian] and Rebel Clash Theme Deck [Zamazenta] are two different lists. Check the language on the box; theme decks are listed in English, French, German, Italian, Spanish, Dutch and Brazilian Portuguese. The wrap should be intact if you want the deck sealed. To upgrade it after opening, add singles from the Pokémon cards page.

• Theme deck, battle deck or starter deck: which is which?

All three are ready to play. Theme decks are the set-linked decks on this page, such as Unified Minds Theme Deck Laser Focus [Necrozma]. The Pokémon battle decks page covers lines like V Battle Deck and ex Battle Deck, and Pokémon starter decks include decks made for learning. For several copies of one theme deck, a deck display such as the Vivid Voltage Theme Deck Display holds them in a single sealed box.
