Pokémon Trainer Kits

FAQ

• What is a Pokémon trainer kit, and which ones are listed?

A trainer kit is a pair of half decks for two people learning the game together, and each kit is named after its two Pokémon. The page lists the EX Trainer Kit [Latias & Latios] and EX Trainer Kit 2 [Plusle & Minun], the DP Trainer Kit [Manaphy & Lucario], the HGSS Trainer Kit [Gyarados & Raichu] and the BW Trainer Kit, plus XY and Sun & Moon kits. Each kit has a set page with its cards, such as DP Trainer Kit: Manaphy & Lucario.

• Which XY and Sun & Moon trainer kits exist?

The XY kits pair Bisharp & Wigglytuff, Sylveon & Noivern, Pikachu Libre & Suicune, and Latias & Latios. The Sun & Moon kits are Lycanroc & Alolan Raichu (2017) and Alolan Sandslash & Alolan Ninetales (2018), the second also sold as a display. The BW Trainer Kit of 2011 pairs Excadrill and Zoroark. Each kit's cards differ, so check the set page linked to the kit you want.

• What should I check before buying a trainer kit?

Make sure you have the right kit: Latias & Latios exists both as the EX Trainer Kit and as the XY Trainer Kit, and the Sun & Moon Trainer Kit: Alolan Sandslash & Alolan Ninetales Display is a box of several kits. If the kit is opened, the listing should state that both half decks are complete. Trainer kits are listed in English, French, German, Italian, Spanish, Dutch and Brazilian Portuguese; for a learning product, pick a language the players read. See XY Trainer Kit: Latias & Latios for its cards.

• Trainer kit or starter deck: which suits a beginner?

A trainer kit is made for two people learning side by side, each taking one half deck, as with the HGSS Trainer Kit [Gyarados & Raichu]. A Pokémon starter deck is a full deck for one player learning alone. Once the basics are clear, players often move on to a complete Pokémon theme deck and then build their own list from single cards.
